A Week in the West Country

we have just got back on board Oakapple after a weeks holiday in cornwall. You might be thinking, but surely your lifestyle is one long holiday? Well, yes I suppose it is really, but we all need a change sometimes, and we love Cornwall, with its rugged coastline and stunning scenery.
The cottage we stayed in was right on the beach in Cadgwith on the Lizard peninsula. We awoke on some mornings to the sounds of the fishing boats being launched off the beach alongside the cottage and who could complain about the sounds of the waves crashing onto the shingle and the plaintive cries of the seagulls fighting over scraps on the cliffs.
There were lots of places we intended to visit but it is easy to just enjoy the views from the cottage and somehow the week just seemed to fly. On one of our walks along the coast path we visited the Lizard Lifeboat station. The list of rescues the boat has taken part in is impressive and a reminder of the dangers of that part of our coast as well of the bravery of the volunteers who man our lifeboats. The following day we were encouraged to come back and see the weekly training exercise. We have all seen film of lifeboat launchings but to be there and see it for real is an unforgetable experience.
We rather got used to afternoons in the Cadgwith Cove Inn at the other end of the beach where we had locally caught fish, and who could resist a Cornish ale called 'Betty Stoggs'?
It was a great week but it is good to be afloat again and heading for Braunston where we are to meet friends from our home town of Fareham and Oakapple is due for dry docking to have a bit of a spruce up.
